Antihypertensive drugs (A-B-C-D)

Ace inhibitor: - pril (Linopril) Decrease BP

 

  • A: Angioedema
  • C: cough
  • E: electrolyte imbalance (hyponatremia, hyperkalemia)

ARBs: -artan (losartan) - Decrease BP

Beta-blocker -lol (atenolol) Decrease HR

Blocks beats

Cautions(4Bs): Brady cardia, Bottomed out BP, Breathing problem – COPD, Blood sugar masking (diabetes) – hypoglycemic (closely monitor sugar)

Calcium Channel Blocker (Niphedipine, Cadizem, Verapamil) Decrease BP & HR

Control BP, Calms the heart

Diuretics - Decrease BP

Drains the fluid, Dehydrate

  • K-sparing: spironolactone (blocks aldosterone), avoid calcium substitute
  • K wasting furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide (caution - decrease potassium, eat fruits, green)

Dilators ¯BP

Dilate vessel

Decrease vascular resistance

Decrease BP

  • Nitroglycerine: No with viagra (-afril)
